Science without borders

ISO 17100 認証マークThe opening remarks of the “Science Japan Meeting” was done by Bill Moran, Publisher of the Science family journals. The primary objective of this meeting, he said, was to discuss how the scientific communities help develop future science for future generations. He pointed out that the key to “stimulate young minds” was “thinking about science as a career” and “the options for funding.”

Scientific indicators and trends of research publications show that China has surpassed Japan and EU countries in most of the indicators, and is now closing in on the US. This shift may be explained by the ‘Thousand Talent’ program, which attracts top overseas talents to repatriate. In Japan, the World Premier Institutes are doing the same. To help career building, AAAS provides Science Career on its Science website for all scientists.

Investment in the future will encourage students to gain international experience and foster overseas collaborations. However, funding is becoming increasingly competitive under current global circumstances. In China again, the funding trend of encouragement of research is obvious in research funding versus GDP, however, the most interesting fact is that investment in basic research has not dropped. China realized that to drive innovation, it needs to invest in basic research. Japan has excellent science but to maintain its science level, Japan should look towards the its own strategies as China did.

ISO27001 認証マークIn recent years, people have witnessed both significant advances in science and increasing mistrust in science by governments and the public. Some countries and governments have moved away from evidence-based policy decisions. AAAS/Science believes in science without borders. This meeting provides ‘some food for thought’ on how the scientist can achieve the goal by promoting literacy, diversity and education.
