組換えxCTの発現により、本来は感染をうけない標的細胞が、KSHVの細胞融合およびウイルス粒子の侵入を許容するようになった。
＜解説＞
The American HeritageR Dictionary of the English Languageによると、副詞としてのotherwiseは、
1. In another way; differently: She thought otherwise.
2. Under other circumstances: Otherwise I might have helped
3. In other respects: an otherwise logical mind.
なので、上記の文では、2)のunder other circumstances＝in the absence of expression of recombinant xCTであり、本来は、と訳せばいいですね。ついでに覚えたい言葉は、render --- permissive です。SVOC 構文で、SがOをCにする。SによりOがCになる（変わる）。一般的、日常的にはget やmake、comeを使いがちですが、科学論文では、renderを使ってみましょう。因みにSCIENCEでは、original research のabstractにこの5年間で9件、render --- more mobile/ render --- insensitive/ render --- less dependent/ render toxicなどと使われています。

また、AT1拮抗薬は、肺胞中隔の障害など、MFSの心血管系外症状も部分的に改善した。
＜解説＞
AT1 antagonismは、厳密にはopposition in physiological action (Medline Plus のMedical Dictionary)であり、 AT1拮抗薬ではなく、AT1への拮抗作用ですが、この作用を行うのがAT1拮抗薬なので、意味的には同じことですね。因みにAT1とは、angiotensin II type 1 receptor のこと。angiotensin II がその受容体の一つであるAT1と結合すると血圧上昇作用が生じるのは、皆さんよくご存じでしょう。この結合を阻止して血圧を下げるのがAT1 antagonist=AT1 blockerです。既に市販されているこのような降圧剤がマルファン症候群（MFS）の一部の症状をreverseするというのは、
To turn around to the opposite direction；
To cause (an engine or a mechanism) to function in reverse.（The American HeritageR Dictionary）
すなわち、発症過程を逆行させる、良くなるように進めるわけです。completely なら回復でいいし、partiallyなら改善するがぴったり。ところでseptation は、Medline Plus のMedical Dictionary に
1 : division into parts by a septum : the condition of being septate
2 : SEPTUM
と書いてあるので、septum と捉えていいですね。

低分子による個別表面ターゲティングにより、Gβαサブユニット機能の選択的調節が可能になるとの仮説を立てた。
＜解説＞
differential diagnosisは鑑別診断、differential stainingは分別染色とされていることから、differential targetingに個別ターゲットと言う訳語をあてましたが、どなたかもっと良い訳語をご存じではないですか。ついでにdifferential blood countは白血球百分率数、differential anesthesiaは分離麻酔(選択的麻酔)と、されています。
The American HeritageR Dictionaryには、“differential”は形容詞として、次のように述べられています。
1. Of, relating to, or showing a difference.
2. Constituting or making a difference; distinctive.
3. Dependent on or making use of a specific difference or distinction.
4. Mathematics Of or relating to differentiation.
5. Involving differences in speed or direction of motion.
MedlinePlusのMedical Dictionaryでは、
1 : of, relating to, or constituting a difference <differential birth rates in different economic levels>
2 : making a distinction between individuals or classes <differential cell counts> <differential staining>
根底には、differenceという概念がある、と理解しましょう。

アポトーシスを誘導する蛋白質BAXとBAKは酵素IRE1aと直接結合して小胞体ストレス応答（unfolded protein response）を制御する
誤って折り畳まれた蛋白質が小胞体に蓄積すると、小胞体上の膜貫通型蛋白リン酸化酵素でエンドリボヌクレアーゼでもあるIRE1aを介して、適応的なストレス応答が惹起される。この応答は小胞体ストレス応答（UPR）と呼ばれる。
＜解説＞
unfoldedは折り畳まれたもの（蛋白質）が開かれた状態をいい、そのような状態の蛋白質の応答をunfolded protein responseという、というのはすぐわかりますが、その和訳は一筋縄ではいきません。Googleで探すのみです。まだ英語表記のままの論文も散見されます。
